The Lemosho Route is widely considered to be the best and most scenic route on Kilimanjaro. The route features all the benefits, offerings, and success ratio of the Machame route by starting a little further round to the west. It leads you over the spectacular Shira Plateau and avoids the clumsiness of the early parts of the Machame route at the same time.
The route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the west, beginning with a long drive from Moshi to Lemosho Gate. From there, the first two days are spent trekking through the rainforest to Shira Ridge, before crossing the Shira Plateau. The route then heads cross the famed Shira plateau and see the beautiful Shira Cathedral before reaching the Shira Camp on day three.
The descend is via the Mweka route, where you will most likely encounter other trekkers who ascended via the Shira, Umbwe, or Machame routes.
If you have both time and enough budget, consider taking the 8 days Lemosho route, which is certainly one of the most enjoyable ways to do Kilimanjaro.
The seven days of the Lemosho route are split into two easier days and offer a better success rate. Experienced and already acclimatized mountaineers may opt for the more difficult 7-day ascent along this route.
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), where a friendly Safari Expert representative will warmly welcome you. From there, you will transfer to your accommodation at Lindrin Lodge in Moshi. Relax and enjoy amenities like the swimming pool and Wi-Fi. In the evening, attend a briefing with experienced managers to help you prepare for your climb. Overnight stay includes breakfast.
Start your journey with a scenic three-hour drive through villages to Londorossi Gate, the entry point to Kilimanjaro National Park. Trek through beautiful rainforest trails that can be muddy, so gaiters and trekking poles are helpful. Along the way, your guide will share fascinating information about the local plants and wildlife. After hiking for three to four hours and gaining 396 meters in elevation, you will arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp, where the cooler mountain air awaits.
Begin the day with a steeper hike as you leave the rainforest behind. The trail takes you higher into the mountain for four to six hours, gaining 719 meters in elevation. You’ll reach the breathtaking Shira Plateau, where the views open up dramatically. Temperatures drop as you arrive at Shira I Camp for the night.
Spend the day exploring the expansive Shira Plateau. This gentle trek takes you eastward towards Kibo Peak. The trail winds across the plateau’s meadows, providing plenty of opportunities for acclimatization. Shira Hut, located at the base of the Lent Hills, serves as your overnight stop. Shira Plateau is one of the highest plateaus on Earth, making it a unique highlight of your journey.
Today focuses on acclimatization as you trek to higher elevations and then descend. Hike along a ridge from the Shira Plateau, passing the junction to Kibo Peak. Continue southeast towards the Lava Tower, a striking volcanic formation known as Shark’s Tooth. After reaching the Lava Tower, descend to Barranco Camp for the night.
Begin your day by tackling the adventurous Barranco Wall, a steep ridge that leads to the stunning Karanga Valley. This part of the hike offers incredible views and showcases the skill of your support team as they navigate the terrain. Once you reach Karanga Camp, enjoy a well-deserved rest.
Continue your climb toward Barafu Camp, completing the South Circuit route. Along the way, you’ll enjoy diverse views of the summit. Arrive at Barafu Camp in the afternoon, where you’ll have an early dinner and rest in preparation for the summit attempt.
Start your climb early in the morning, between midnight and 2 AM, for the most challenging part of the journey. Ascend through scree towards Stella Point, where you’ll witness a spectacular sunrise. From Stella Point, it takes about an hour to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro. Celebrate your achievement with photos and enjoy the breathtaking views. After a short time at the summit, descend back to Barafu Camp for lunch and a brief rest. The journey continues down to Mweka Camp, where you’ll spend your last night on the mountain.
Enjoy breakfast before participating in a farewell ceremony with your crew. Descend for three to four hours to Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificates. The terrain on this final leg can be warmer, wetter, and steeper, so gaiters and poles are recommended. Afterward, a vehicle will transfer you to your hotel in Moshi. Here, you can enjoy a well-deserved hot shower and dinner as you celebrate your success.
Start your day with a leisurely breakfast at the hotel. Check out by 11:00 AM, though late check-out may be available for an extra fee. Finally, transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure, concluding your unforgettable Kilimanjaro adventure.
