The Whiskey Route — most scenic trek with 95% summit success rate
You will be picked up at the Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) by an Ahsante Tours representative and transferred to your hotel in Moshi town. The drive from the airport takes approximately 45 minutes through lush green landscapes with Mount Kilimanjaro towering majestically in the distance. Once at the hotel, you can relax, settle in, and enjoy the warm hospitality of Moshi. Later in the afternoon, your professional mountain guide will meet with you for a thorough briefing about the upcoming trek on the famous Whiskey Route. The guide will walk you through the entire itinerary day by day, discuss what to expect at each camp, explain the acclimatization process, and answer any questions you may have. An equipment check will be conducted to ensure you have all the necessary mountain gear. Any missing items can be rented locally at affordable prices before we depart tomorrow.
Half an hour drive from Moshi lies the Machame Gate at 1,817m, the starting point of this legendary Whiskey Route. After completing park registration formalities at the gate, you are off on your 6-day trek through one of Kilimanjaro most spectacular landscapes. The first section of the route climbs steadily and passes through magnificent, dense tropical rainforest. This path is less well-trodden than other routes so it can get somewhat overgrown in places and it is often wet and muddy underfoot, adding to the sense of adventure. The canopy above filters the sunlight creating a magical atmosphere as you trek deeper into the forest. You may spot various bird species, colorful butterflies, and if you are lucky, the beautiful Black and White Colobus monkeys swinging through the treetops. The steady climb through this lush environment brings you to Machame Camp at 3,021m, nestled in the heath zone with beautiful views of the surrounding forest and the mountain above.
Our route continues upward through the forest zone, gradually transitioning into the heath and moorland environment. The vegetation changes dramatically as you ascend, with giant heather trees giving way to open moorland. We then reach the steep ascent onto the Shira Plateau, one of the most rewarding sections of the trek. As you climb higher, the panoramic views of the mountain open up in every direction. Looking back, you will be able to see Mt Meru rising high above Arusha City in the distance, a spectacular sight that puts the scale of your achievement into perspective. The Shira Plateau itself is a vast, flat expanse of moorland at 3,830m, offering some of the most dramatic and expansive views on the entire route. The terrain is otherworldly with giant lobelias and groundsel plants scattered across the landscape. We arrive at Shira Camp in the afternoon, giving you time to rest and absorb the incredible surroundings.
Walking now on high moorland, the landscape changes the entire character of the trek. The terrain becomes more barren and volcanic as we traverse the southwest side of Kilimanjaro. We pass underneath the imposing Lava Tower, a 300-meter volcanic plug that stands as one of the most recognizable landmarks on the mountain, and continue through the final section of the Western Breach before reaching camp. The day has been spent at altitude reaching up to 4,600m at the Lava Tower, but we have carefully followed the mountaineering code of walk high, sleep low to aid your body acclimatization to altitude. This strategy is essential for a successful summit attempt and is what makes the Machame Route so effective. The descent from the Lava Tower to Barranco Camp is steep but rewarding, taking you through the dramatic Great Barranco Wall area. The camp is situated in a sheltered valley surrounded by towering cliffs with extensive views of the plains below, providing a spectacular setting for the night.
After a good night rest and breakfast at Barranco Camp, we set off on our walk to Barafu Camp at 4,640m. The morning begins with the exciting climb up the Great Barranco Wall, a challenging but non-technical rock scramble that provides incredible views as you ascend. Once over the wall, the climb will take us across desolate scree slopes with no vegetation around us at all. The landscape is stark and lunar-like, with volcanic rock and dust stretching in every direction under the brilliant African sky. It is a tough, steep walk made more difficult by the altitude, but each step brings you closer to your ultimate goal. On arriving at Barafu Camp, we eat and spend the afternoon resting as we prepare for a long night and day ahead. It is absolutely critical to keep hydrated and warm at this altitude. We have an early dinner and then try to get some sleep as we will be getting up between 11pm and 12am to start the climb to the summit. The anticipation builds as you lie in your tent, knowing that in just a few hours you will begin the final push to the roof of Africa.
Today is the Big Day, the summit stage. We start off at around midnight, walking steeply upwards to the summit glaciers by the light of our headlamps. The darkness adds an element of mystery and excitement as you begin the most challenging and rewarding climb of your life. We will be climbing scree for 4 to 5 hours but gain incredible height over a short distance. The views are spectacular even in the pre-dawn darkness as the stars twinkle above and the lights of distant towns twinkle below. We should be on the crater rim at Stella Point (5,739m) as the first rays of the sun hit us, painting the sky in brilliant shades of orange, pink, and gold. Spectacular ice cliffs within the crater surround us and the views to jagged Mawenzi peak and beyond are absolutely breathtaking. Another hour of walking takes us to the summit, Uhuru Peak at 5,895m (19,340ft) the highest point in all of Africa. Standing on the summit, surrounded by glaciers and the vast African landscape stretching to the horizon, is an experience that will stay with you forever. We begin our descent by returning to Stella Point and then descending on scree slope and track back to Barafu Camp for breakfast, before finally heading down to Millennium Camp for a long well-earned rest.
A gentle trek takes us down through the lush tropical rainforest to Mweka Gate at 1,630m, marking the end of our incredible adventure on Mount Kilimanjaro. The descent through the rainforest is a beautiful contrast to the barren landscapes you experienced at higher altitudes. The sounds of birds, the smell of vegetation, and the cool, damp air are a welcome change. After approximately 6 to 7 hours of trekking, you will arrive back at the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate where you will complete park formalities and receive your well-deserved summit certificates, which you can hang up with pride for the rest of your life. We are then met by our vehicles and return to the hotel in Moshi, where you can treat yourself to a welcome shower and perhaps a cold beer or two before our big celebration dinner at the hotel. This is a wonderful evening to reflect on the extraordinary journey you have completed and celebrate with your fellow climbers and the Ahsante Tours team.
The day is left free to wind down after the trek before your flight home. Depending on your flight times, you could explore Moshi town and pick up some souvenirs before heading to the airport. We also welcome you to spare an hour of your day to plant a tree as part of our environmental conservation efforts in the Kilimanjaro region. Safari and Zanzibar add-ons are available if you wish to continue exploring Tanzania after your incredible Kilimanjaro experience.
