Airport pickup and transfer to Weruweru River Lodge. Guide briefing and equipment check. Missing gear can be rented.
Half hour drive to Machame Gate. Complete park registrations. Trek through magnificent dense rainforest. The path is less well-trodden and often wet and muddy underfoot.
Continue up through the forest until the steep ascent onto the Shira Plateau. Rewarding views of the mountain. Looking back you can see Mt Meru rising above Arusha City.
Walking on high moorland, the landscape changes the entire character of the trek. Traverse the southwest side, passing underneath the Lava Tower and the Western Breach. Follow the walk high, sleep low strategy for acclimatization.
After breakfast, set off to climb the Great Barranco Wall. A challenging but non-technical rock climb. Pass underneath the Heim and Kersten glaciers. Continue to Karanga Valley Camp.
Trek across desolate scree slopes with no vegetation. A tough steep walk made more difficult by the altitude. Early dinner and rest before the midnight summit attempt.
Midnight start. Climb scree for 4-5 hours. Reach crater rim at Stella Point (5739m) as the first rays of the sun hit. Continue to Uhuru Peak (5895m). Descend to Barafu for breakfast, then to Millennium Camp.
Gentle trek down through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. Complete park formalities and receive certificates. Return to hotel in Moshi for celebration.
Free day to wind down. Transfer to airport for flight home. Optional safari or Zanzibar extensions available.
