Most recommended version with extra acclimatization day
You will be picked up at the Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) by an Ahsante Tours representative and transferred to your hotel in Moshi town. The drive from the airport takes approximately 45 minutes through lush green landscapes with Mount Kilimanjaro towering majestically in the distance. Once at the hotel, you can relax, settle in, and enjoy the warm hospitality of Moshi. Later in the afternoon, your professional mountain guide will meet with you for a thorough briefing about the upcoming trek. The guide will walk you through the entire itinerary day by day, discuss what to expect at each camp, explain the acclimatization process, and answer any questions you may have. An equipment check will be conducted to ensure you have all the necessary mountain gear. Any missing items can be rented locally at affordable prices before we depart tomorrow morning.
You will be picked up at your hotel at around 08:00am and transferred to the Lemosho gate located on the western side of Kilimanjaro. The drive takes approximately two hours through picturesque farmland and local villages. At the Londorossi Gate, you will register for your Kilimanjaro climb and your guide will handle all the formalities. A short 15km drive takes you to the drop-off point and the trailhead to start your climb. You begin trekking steadily through the magnificent rainforests of the Lemosho Glades, one of the most pristine and beautiful sections of the entire route. The forest is dense and lush, with towering trees creating a natural canopy overhead. You may spot various bird species, colorful butterflies, and if you are exceptionally lucky, Black and White Colobus monkeys swinging through the treetops. The trail is well-maintained but the altitude gain is noticeable as you climb from 2,385m to 2,780m. Porters will assist throughout the trek carrying all of your luggage except your day pack, and the mountain crew will have already set up your tents before you arrive at Big Tree Camp. You can rest and enjoy the beautiful forest surroundings in which you will camp tonight.
Today you will trek across a plateau of grassy moorland and heather scattered with volcanic rock formations. The trail takes you out of the dense rainforest and into the open moorland zone, where the landscape transforms dramatically. Giant lobelias and groundsel plants, some of the most unique plants on Kilimanjaro, dot the terrain creating an otherworldly atmosphere. Our destination for today is the Shira 1 Camp at 3,500m, from where there are often stunning views of Kibo Peak floating on the clouds. The views from this altitude are absolutely spectacular, with panoramic vistas stretching across the Shira Plateau and the surrounding peaks. We gain a reasonable amount of altitude today and parts of the route are fairly steep, so pacing is important. The air becomes noticeably thinner as you climb higher, and you may start to feel the effects of altitude. Arriving at Shira 1 Camp in the early afternoon gives you plenty of time to rest, explore the surroundings, and acclimatize to the altitude. The camp offers some of the most atmospheric settings on the entire route.
Today you will get the chance to view the Northern Ice Fields from the western side of the mountain with some unusual and breathtaking views of Kibo. The ice fields are massive glaciers that have been slowly retreating over the decades, and seeing them up close is a powerful reminder of the mountain natural beauty and the effects of climate change. Our steady climb across the moorland of the Shira Plateau will help with acclimatization and we enjoy great panoramic views in every direction. The plateau is vast and open, with volcanic rock formations and sparse vegetation creating a stark, beautiful landscape. Our destination today is the Shira 2 Camp at 3,900m. In the afternoon you will take an acclimatization walk, climbing higher before descending back to camp for dinner and overnight. This walk is crucial for your body to adapt to the altitude and significantly improves your chances of reaching the summit successfully. The camp is well-situated with excellent views and provides a comfortable base for the nights ahead.
Your trek starts with an ascent with far-reaching panoramic views, walking into the climatic zone of the upland desert and on the lava ridges beneath the glaciers of the Western Breach. The landscape changes dramatically as you leave the moorland behind and enter the alpine desert zone. You will reach the distinct pinnacle of the Lava Tower at 4,640m, our high point for the day and a great place to enjoy your lunch. The Lava Tower is a 300-meter volcanic plug that stands as one of the most recognizable landmarks on Kilimanjaro, and the views from its base are absolutely spectacular. In the afternoon we make a steep descent to our camp for the night, located in the base of the Great Barranco Valley at 3,960m, sheltered by towering cliffs but with extensive views of the plains below. The descent is steep but rewarding, taking you through the dramatic Great Barranco Wall area. This day perfectly follows the walk high, sleep low principle that is essential for successful acclimatization on Kilimanjaro.
Our day starts by descending into the start of the Great Barranco, a huge ravine that cuts dramatically through the mountain landscape. We then exit steeply, up the Great Barranco Wall, which divides us from the southeastern slopes of Kibo. The wall is a challenging but non-technical rock scramble that provides incredible views as you ascend, with the sheer drops on either side adding to the excitement. It is a climb over rock, not technical but long and tiring, requiring both physical effort and mental determination. Passing underneath the Heim and Kersten glaciers, we head towards the Karanga Valley. The glaciers tower above you, their blue ice glistening in the sunlight, creating one of the most dramatic landscapes you will ever witness. From here we have a steep climb up from Karanga Valley to our nights camp at Karanga Camp, set at 3,963m. For those feeling strong we will go for a mid-afternoon acclimatization trek up to around 4,200m before descending back to camp for the night. The camp offers excellent views of the glaciers and the summit above.
After a good nights rest and breakfast at Karanga Camp, we set off on our walk to Barafu Camp at 4,640m. The climb will take us across desolate scree slopes with no vegetation around us at all. The landscape is stark and otherworldly, with volcanic rock and dust stretching in every direction under the brilliant African sky. It is a tough, steep walk made more difficult by the altitude, but each step brings you closer to your ultimate goal. On arriving at Barafu Camp, we eat and spend the afternoon resting as we prepare for a long night and day ahead. It is absolutely critical to keep hydrated and warm at this altitude. We have an early dinner and then try to get some sleep as we will be getting up between 11pm and midnight to start the climb to the summit. The anticipation builds as you lie in your tent, knowing that in just a few hours you will begin the final push to the roof of Africa. Barafu Camp is a bleak but dramatic setting, perched on the edge of the scree slopes with the summit looming above, providing the perfect launching point for your summit attempt.
We start off at around midnight, walking steeply upwards to the summit glaciers by the light of our headlamps. The darkness adds an element of mystery and excitement as you begin the most challenging and rewarding climb of your life. We will be climbing scree for 4 to 5 hours but gain incredible height over a short distance. The views are spectacular even in the pre-dawn darkness as the stars twinkle above and the lights of distant towns twinkle below. We should be on the crater rim at Stella Point (5,739m) as the first rays of the sun hit us, painting the sky in brilliant shades of orange, pink, and gold. The moment when the first rays of sunlight illuminate the African landscape below is one of the most magical experiences you will ever witness. Spectacular ice cliffs within the crater surround us and the views to jagged Mawenzi peak and beyond are absolutely breathtaking. Another hours walking takes us to the summit, Uhuru Peak at 5,895m, the highest point in all of Africa. Standing on the summit, surrounded by glaciers and the vast African landscape stretching to the horizon, is an experience that will stay with you forever. We begin our descent by returning to Stella Point and then descending on scree slope and track back to Barafu Camp for breakfast, before finally heading down to Millennium Camp for a long well-earned rest.
A gentle trek takes us down through the lush tropical rainforest to Mweka Gate at 1,630m, marking the end of our incredible adventure on Mount Kilimanjaro. The descent through the rainforest is a beautiful contrast to the barren landscapes you experienced at higher altitudes. The sounds of birds, the smell of vegetation, and the cool, damp air are a welcome change. After approximately 6 to 7 hours of trekking, you will arrive back at the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate where you will complete park formalities and receive your well-deserved summit certificates, which you can hang up with pride for the rest of your life. We are then met by our vehicles and return to the hotel in Moshi, where you can treat yourself to a welcome shower and perhaps a cold beer or two before our big celebration dinner at the hotel. This is a wonderful evening to reflect on the extraordinary journey you have completed and celebrate with your fellow climbers and the Ahsante Tours team.
The day is left free to wind down after the trek before your flight home. Depending on your flight times, you could explore Moshi town and pick up some souvenirs before heading to the airport. We also welcome you to spare an hour of your day to plant a tree as part of our environmental conservation efforts in the Kilimanjaro region. Safari and Zanzibar add-ons are available if you wish to continue exploring Tanzania after your incredible Kilimanjaro experience.
